I read your Cronenberg reviews because I know I'll never watch his films (body horror is a sort of Rubicon for me, just can't do it) and yet I remain fascinated by them. So thanks for your service.
Thank you for giving some love to this movie, Dane! Cronenberg is so clever in his actions that, with this film, he’s also exposed a blind spot in the Cannes mindset (remember those awful reactions?) :D
I haven’t heard of the Cannes reactions. Was it for this movie specifically?
Cannes is one of those situations where if the audience loves it or hates it, it’s probably a good movie, or at least interesting. It’s when the audiences mildly like it that you can pass.
It was released to awful reviews, but there was something particularly odd about them. What you said was to be expected, but in this case it was downright strange—for a moment, they even made me think Cronenberg might actually have flopped.
Yup, I meant "aesthetically" flopped. Not that I believed it, but the reviews were disoriented enough to transmit that feeling. I'll stay tuned to your recommendations, keep it up!
I really think some people are going to take the ending as a letdown rather than a thematic hit. I probably should have addressed the ending in my recommendation but I avoid spoilers and analytical criticism in my recommendations.
You seem to know what you're doing, so let's leave the ending to the viewers. It is also fascinating how David keeps saying that he himself doesn't think on any metaconnection between his movies, that's up to us analysts.

I mean it might flop financially, I can’t control that, but the purpose of my recommendations is to try to prevent it as far as my agency allows.

P.S.: Whatever didn't seem to work for me in the first viewing, worked like a charm in the second.
