Excellent point: "if you can’t find 2-6 movies on this list that look compelling, then the issue isn’t that Hollywood isn’t making original films anymore, the issue is that you’re not really interested enough in movies to find them." It does indeed seem that there are many people who would rather whine about a perceived problem than do anything to fix it. More broadly the point applies to the entirety of the "we live in a stuck culture" discourse. Culture isn't stuck; things are merely changing—both in the kinds of cultural products offered, and the means by which they are funded and distributed—and there's nothing fundamentally wrong with that.
For people who want to be part of a thriving, vibrant arts culture and who truly want to support that culture, your list is wonderful. But for people like me who don't really know how to dive into the world of film, it's important to remember that there is a practically limitless back catalog of old releases just waiting to be discovered.
Drat, you're right. Not sure how I missed that but on the other hand earlier on in the list I was still getting a handle on how to cover my bases on this.
This is true! Great list! And thanks for the reminder that findings great or different films means doing a little bit of work. Kind of like back in the day visiting a video store. You go to find something new, entertaining or off the wall. Streaming has made us all believe these films are to travel and land on our lap.
I’m ready for the revolution to traditional media, double features, matinees, and random B movies in theatres.
I don't see any information to that effect. IMDb turned out to be surprisingly unhelpful on this project but Wikipedia has a really great sidebar that says other media the story is based on, and nothing is mentioned for Civil War.
I went ahead and did a search after your comment to check in case Wikipedia also failed me, and am not finding anything. I am fairly confident it's Alex Garland's original concept.
I remember it from the credits and from conversations with friends about how it’s based on IP written by a British guy who doesn’t understand American politics but now doing some Googling it seems that you’re right. Weird. I couldn’t possibly have been wrong about this, must be the Mandela affect ☺️
I mean, Alex Garland is British. I'll refrain from certifying his understanding of American politics -- I didn't think Civil War required it to work on the level it was operating, personally.
File under “Things Nobody Asked For But Now Are Aware We Wanted, Hopefully First of Many” please Jarvis

There's definitely more great movies than any one person could ever see.
The Fall Guy was based on a TV show.

New entry is at the bottom, Snack Shack.

Appreciate the Empire Waist shoutout, my friend! 💜💖
Hell yeah.
I wish I went to the movies more when I was younger, didn’t have kids, and lived closer to the indie cinema in downtown Ann Arbor.
Might have to put in some effort and go see a couple in 2025.
I share this pet peeve of yours but wasn’t Civil War based on a book?
