The Adventures of BrundleFly & Spawn Sam: Filth Detectives
An Old Toy Photography Comic
NOTE: Because this post is mostly large-scale images, you will want to click through to view it in your browser, ideally.
My friend Monte takes pictures of toys, a subculture of photography that I find interesting. I never had any aspiration to do toy photography, but one day Monte shared a shelf of toys for sale / trade, and something weird happened: some of the toys spoke to me.
There was this tall owl monster called the Lord of Tears Owlman, a strange goth clown I realized later I remembered as Spawn Sam, and BrundleFly, from the Cronenberg movie. A story immediately leapt to my head. I reached out to Monte and negotiated a small fee and shipping.
And I made this. Enjoy:
Some fun notes on this:
I had to use microphotography filters on my very much not microphotography lens to pull off these angles and close-ups of such small characters.
The pages are standard comic book size, as best as I understand from researching it — however they lack bleed space.
I wrote the ideas for at least two more of these, one of which involves the Faun from Pan’s Labyrinth and another which would use a very, very creepy doll a maker makes on Instagram — that costs £200. If you would like to see these next two episodes, donate to the Venmo @Dane-Benko or use the QR code below and tag it “Toys”. When I get to $250 I will make the next episode:
